Italy: Parents who raise children on vegan diet could be jailed

Elvira Savino, the deputy of the centre-right Forza Italia party, has stated that she wishes to see a controversial bill passed by the Italian government that will see parents who allow their children to eat a vegan diet potentially facing time in prison. Indeed, the draft bill claims vegan parents are imposing a diet “devoid of essential elements for [children’s] healthy and balanced growth”.

Dieticians such as the American Dietetic Association say vegan diets are absolutely fine for infants and children, but stress that parents ensure that their children consume all the required nutrients in their diets, especially vitamin B12.

Doctors have argued that in some recent cases of malnourished children which we have seen in the media the parents probably didn’t know how to supplement a plant-based diet appropriately for youngsters.

It is important to note that if you are planning on raising your children vegan, that you arm yourself with all the necessary information you need to allow them to grow up healthy and happy. And let’s face it, how many children are frequently fed ready meals and don’t even get their 5 a day? We don’t see that making the news so much, do we?

Are you a vegan parent? Do you get criticised for raising vegan children?
